Our Mission

The SCPC is committed to provide useful information and resources for people with developmental disabilities and their families.

What is the Parent Coalition?

The Spokane County Parent Coalition is an organization designed to provide information and resources to families who have sons/daughters with developmental disabilities.  The purpose of the Parent Coalition is to provide information about:

bullet Services and supports available in our local
community.
bullet Education, health, housing, transportation and other resources.
bullet Local parent support groups, meetings, conferences.
bullet Current Legislative issues local, statewide, and federal.
bullet How to become involved in the legislative process.

Other activities of the coalition include:

bullet Identify concerns of people with disabilities and their families in Spokane County.
bullet Advocate for the collective concerns of families.
bullet Provide a local contact for additional information.
bullet Provide presentations/workshops on issues important to families.
bullet Provide a Family Scholarship Fund available to parents
bullet Present a family perspective on policy issues.

How Does the Parent Coalition Work?

The coordinator is the parent of a son/daughter with developmental disabilities.  The coordinator gathers information from a variety of sources and distributes to families in monthly mailings.  The Parent Coalition members then share information with family members, other parents, and other organizations they are involved with.

The Coordinator is available as a local resource and organizes community events for families to receive specific information or give input.  The Coordinator listens to and documents family input to be used to guide the direction of future coalition activities.

As families become more informed, they are more aware of the resources available to them as well as the systems that deliver such services.  In turn parents will be better able to access systems and advocate for their families needs.

The coalition also provides a family scholarship fund to assist families in attending conferences and workshops specific to the disability of their child.

Goals of the Parent Coalition

bullet Provide accurate, up to date information about resources available to people with developmental disabilities and their families.
bullet Identify and develop needed resources for families in our community where none currently exist.
bullet Develop understanding and respect of people with developmental disabilities in our local community.
bullet Ensure parent input is included in policy level decisions that affect people with disabilities and their families.
bullet Increase awareness of families and encourage them to become involved at a level that is comfortable to them.
bullet Encourage and develop parent participation and leadership.
bullet Utilize the power and expertise of families in our community.
